Well, a little while back, I wrote about how my PC was kind of slow. I did a cleanmgr on the hard drive, to clean up a bunch of stuff, and a bunch of stuff was cleaned off. However, I think I may have cleaned off my anti virus tools as well. I was looking through my e-mails this week and had 163 e-mails i hadn't read. So, i started to delete everything i Didn't recognize. I saw an e-mail that looked like it was from my bank, because it had the bank name in the e-mail. I did get a call from the bank last week, so i thought maybe they were just following up on the call. However, not more than a few minutes after I opened that e-mail my PC went crazy with viruses...... =(... I couldn't do a quick system restore because that was enabled by the virus. I couldn't do a quick cleanmgr, because that was enabled by the virus. So, I am without a PC for the moment. If anyone knows how I can just wipe everything off my PC and reprogram it, please post here. I have the process written down somewhere, but, I can't find it right now. I am using my work PC to write this message, but I can't do anything except check messages on this PC and visit a few sites. I will check in here again later today and tomorrow. Maybe give me some advice on which antivirus tools have shown to be most effective. I may just buy a new PC. So, advice about good gaming PCs might be helpful. My PC was built by a friend's boss, so can't really call him. I am due for an update I think... Warrens Raid was getting too laggy. Advice about video cards would be nice too. I haven't looked at anything in 4 years when this PC was built.

Do all your virus scans and malware/spyware tools while booted in Safe Mode.

It sounds similar to what my mom had. It's a nasty little thing that is hiding in websites that are normally safe. It can be disabled through msconfig in safe mode, then all remnants can be found and destroyed during a virus scan. Good luck! (Don't go into msconfig unless you know what you're doing though. =) )

thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will try all these suggestions when I get home from work tonight (Friday). I don't know what I would be doing in msconfig, so i may not try that, however, if it comes down to it and I have a choice between a shotgun, or msconfig, I will choose msconfig.
Hope to see anyone this weekend. I guess i need to check my e-mail more often than once every 3 months... and buy better protection. FYI, last night I did try to go to malwarebytes.org, but, the virus blocked the site. ![]() |

With the virus blocking the site it let's me know better what you are dealing with... this is a rogue virus (appropriate eh?)... you will need to get a full install file of Malwarebytes on a cd or flash drive and bypass downloading it from your pc... but don't pitch the computer just yet... this virus sounds nastier than it really is...

you will need the latest free version of malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org and the 4.8 version of Avast anti-virus which you can get at http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
There is a version 5 now, but you will want 4.8, at least at first. you can update later. And Smirfraudfix tool which you can get at http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe Im gonna take a guess you have windows XP, and these istructions are for that. if thats an incorrect guess let me know what you have and i will update. 1)load your computer into safe mode with network support. (pressing F8 continuously after the computer first comes on is a sure fire way to get the menu) 2) Select the user "administrator" one it boots to the user select screen. 3) copy smitfraudfix.exe to your desktop and run it, once you get to the selection menu press "2" and "enter". 4) once Smitfraudfix is completed and you are back to your desktop, install malwarebytes and continue reloading it, and going to the update tab and hitting update until it says you have the latest version. then select the scan tab and do a thorough scan of your hard drives. 5) While Malwarebytes is scanning, install Avast. during the install of avast It will ask you if you want to schedule a boot scan, say no. It will also ask you if you want to reboot, also say no. once you have completed installing avast go to the avast icon on your desktop and run avast. once it loads up you want to hit the update button (looks like a lightning bolt) then click the little up arrow looking thing in the top left corner and select schedule boot scan, make sure the scan archives box is checked. then hit schedule. It will ask you if you want to reboot, SAY NO. you can now close avast. 6) Once Malwarebytes completes select the view results button in the bottom right corner, once that window comes up you can tell it to remove all the infections it found. 7) now that Malwarebytes is done and removed what it found, restart the computer. during the boot process before windows finishes loading it should stop the computer and begin a virus scan. as its scanning if it find anything it will ask you what to do and give you a list of options. I always advise people to select "2" which will delete anything that it finds infected. that is the safest thing to do with the infected files. Once Avast is done scanning it should complete the load into windows, only now you should be virus free. (If you register Avast home edition it is free, slows your computer very little and does a good job.) NOTE: It is very important you use Avast version 4.8 and not 5. Verson 5 cannot install under safe mode and will cause you some headaches if you try. |

Thanks everyone. With everyone's help here, and about 15 hours of experimenting and determination, I believe that the virus is gone. I have not checked my different files yet, but I am not getting all those nasty warnings telling my such and such is infected. I believe I am cured. I finally figured out how to get back into the internet. I used Blyndem's advice, which took about 6 hours, the first 3 hours only scanned 4%, the last hour or 2 scanned all the rest. Then I had to reset something in my advanced something er other... (my tech terminology), and then after all that, i was able to get onto the internet. Once there, i went to malwarebytes.org and did the full scan of the free version.
After doing all of that, I logged straight into here. I see a couple more pieces of advice. I will look at those tomorrow, but for now I am burned out on my stupid PC.... Thank so much everyone. I actually learned quit a bit more about PCs this year. PS - the rogue pun was funny... made me laugh! |
